Iím a Minneapolis-based freelance journalist who frequently tackles challenging subjects for various print, online and radio media. With nearly seven years of experience as both a freelancer and a staff reporter ó I'm knowledgeable about local government and communities. On a national level Iíve reported for Bloomberg News and have written for the following Minnesota news outlets: Star Tribune, Minnesota Independent, Finance and Commerce, Twin Cities Daily Planet, KFAI and Southwest Journal/Downtown Journal, among others. In early June, I assisted in a Bloomberg News story about a winning lawsuit brought by four Minnesota nonprofits against Wells Fargo. Recently, Iíve written about a theater production, green expo and birding program for the Star Tribuneís north metro section. Over the past few years, Iíve specialized in local civil/human rights topics, reporting on issues internal to the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights and its complaints investigations process for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, which some of my sources say contributed to the recent replacement of the former department head. To pull it off, I cultivated trustworthy inside sources and obtained valuable documents. During a six month fellowship with the Minnesota Independent in 2008, I collaborated on an award-winning project examining corporate donors and separately, security for the Republican National Convention (RNC). I also compiled a lengthy list of journalists who were swept up by authorities during the RNC ó which was republished widely. Besides that, I penned research-intensive stories about the plight of undocumented people, police collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, instances of racial profiling and complaints against the Minneapolis police. Previously, I worked as a full-time education/community/arts reporter for the Southwest Journal/Downtown Journal, where I produced breaking and feature-length stories on everything from overcrowded classrooms in Minneapolis Public Schools to the death of a crime-fighting pig. Also, Iím an active member of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and Iím a board member for the Minnesota News Council. I can be reached at 612-702-4906 or My schedule is flexible.
