Work has previously appeared: The Energy Factor, Front Range News, UPWARDS, Visa Site, American Towns.

I am Justin McGown, formerly an Associate Editor at Group SJR and a graduate of the Creative Writing program at Carnegie Mellon University. I am a quick starter and strong contributor in any position owing to my experience with digital storytelling and familiarity with journalistic writing. For almost two years I have been writing articles for various corporate news platforms and providing social media content for several clients.

My primary responsibilities included contributing to ExxonMobil's Energy Factor before I became the lead editor on Front Range News, a platform for Colorado based Extraction Oil and Gas. My work here has given me a deep familiarity for both the technical and policy aspects of oil and gas development. I also worked on several other accounts, including providing social media content for both the US Forest Service, Visa Inc. and Sprint Corp. I also produced articles for Upwards, a blog which highlights the advanced uses of the 3Doodler, a three-dimensional printing pen. My duties required me to write, edit, and collaborate with a multimedia team to create graphics and videos about a wide variety of topics. I also operate the back end of several websites and have familiarity with several content management systems, including Hootsuite and Word Press.

While the work I did was in the service of brands, I employed the same skills as any journalist dealing with technical topics. Over the course of any week I wrote, edited, designed and published two to three articles and infographics while managing a social media account. This entails managing and conducting interviews, tracking down sources, and interpreting information from public records and transcripts.

Prior to my time at Group SJR I spent my four years as an undergraduate student involved with The Tartan, an award-winning student paper, which serves a community of 14,000. After a year working as a Staff Writer and Photographer at The Tartan I was elected to the position of Online Editor. In that role I was primarily tasked with managing the paper’s social media presence, which saw greatly increased traffic and gained hundreds of new followers. However, I also expanded the role of our online presence beyond just sharing content with followers to include breaking news coverage of events ranging from fires on campus to celebrities appearing nearby. My coverage of these events would go online days before a follow up story could appear in our weekly issue, and I learned to keep abreast of happenings in the local area.

I am passionate about writing and journalism, and I hope to provide the you and the community your work serves with the abilities I have spent the past years developing.
