I've returned to freelance writing after retiring as a professor of journalism at CUNY-Brooklyn College. I write on government, politics and religion. My books include "An Unlikely Union: The Love-Hate Story of New York's Irish and Italians" (NYU Press, 2015) and "The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi's Mission of Peace" (Doubleday, 2009). I worked in daily journalism for 23 years, mostly at Newsday's New York City paper, where I served as City Hall bureau chief and city editor.
