Bill Sharp writes "Look East," a column that appears in the Insight Section of the Sunday Honolulu Star-Bulletin and focuses on contemporary East Asian affairs. In addition, Bill teaches classes in East Asian domestic and international politics at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, HI. He often travels to China, Taiwan, Japan, and other Asian destinations to gather data. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has a good grasp on Japanese. He lived in Japan for eight years and has studied in both China and Taiwan. He served two tours of duty with the army in Vietnam. Besides the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, his work has appeared in the Honolulu Advertiser, the Journal of Asian Studies, Asiaweek, the Tokyo Journal, Tokyo Business Today, and the Mainichi Daily News. He is also President of Sharp Research, LLC which does contract research on East Asia and Chinese-English, English to Chinese translation. Bill is a member of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of China.
