Dear SPJ Members,
It has come to our attention that the SPJ Freelancer Directory was mentioned in a court document regarding an alleged plot to threaten journalists. The document states that members of a violent extremist group recommended the directory as a way to identify journalists to target. However, we have no evidence to suggest the directory was actually used for this purpose.
As you may know, the freelancer directory listings are visible to the public so SPJs freelance members can promote themselves to anyone looking to hire a freelance journalist. Being able to post to the directory is a member-only perk.
Since becoming aware of this situation, we have hidden all contact information except email address and website for everyone listed in the directory. We recommend you take this opportunity to review the information you share online and take any precautions you deem necessary to protect your personal information.
Your safety and peace of mind are important to us, so please let us know if you believe you have been targeted through information available on the SPJ website or if you would like your name and information removed from the freelancer directory. And of course, if you believe you are in danger of any kind, contact your local authorities.
If you have any questions, please check the SPJ Freelance group on Facebook or contact SPJ headquarters at 317-927-8000 or email@example.com.
