ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ohio University has been selected by the Society of Professional Journalists to receive the Outstanding Campus Chapter award for the second year in a row. The Outstanding Campus Chapter award honors chapters for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the profession of journalism.

The Ohio University SPJ chapter is being honored for its dedication to providing educational opportunities for members. In the last year, it staged 30 successful events with its 53 members.

Under the leadership of adviser Nerissa Young and President Hayley Harding, some of the events the chapter hosted were a birthday party for James Madison, a First Amendment Free Food Festival, a campus-wide Grammar Smackdown contest and Q&A sessions with SPJ National President Lynn Walsh and other influential journalists.

Young also worked with the chapter to provide a session focused on social media and suicide coverage which attracted about 50 students.

In addition, with attendance of more than 100 people, the chapter had Freedom Sings, a nationally known group, perform “banned” songs to highlight the power of the First Amendment and free speech.

The chapter was honored tonight at the Student Union during the Excellence in Journalism 2017 conference in Anaheim, California.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Support excellent journalism and fight for your right to know. Become a member, give to the Legal Defense Fund, or give to the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation.
