Fifty local SPJ chapter leaders will attend the 1996 Scripps Leadership Retreat. The retreat is scheduled for June 21-23 in Greencastle, Ind.

"This retreat is an important step for the Society's future," said G. Kelly Hawes, SPJ president. "Not only will the retreat offer ideas for our chapters, but we anticipate that it will serve as a foundation for future national leaders."

The retreat is possible due to a grant from the sons of former Sigma Delta Chi President E.W. "Ted" Scripps. Over the three year span, the leadership of every professional chapter and many college chapters will have the opportunity to gather and discuss the issues facing local chapters.

This program for the 1996 retreat features sessions including fundraising, increasing membership, avoiding burnout, leadership strategies, and a review of the basic structure of SPJ on a national level.

"We're looking forward to bringing SPJ's chapter leaders to Greencastle," said Greg Christopher, SPJ's executive director. "Chapters will be able to see firsthand how their organization operates and get a better perspective on the importance of a strong local and national partnership."

Chapters not sending leaders to the 1996 retreat will be given top priority for the upcoming retreats. More details will be announced later this year.
