SPJ Members,

In the next few months, you will receive your first issue of the new and improved Quill. Sooner than that, you will start to see new content on Both changes are in response to your feedback about the future of Quill.

We heard you, and we are going to deliver.

Quill will focus more on feature-length stories, exploring some of the biggest issues facing journalists today. We will offer in-depth articles that will help you thrive in this rapidly changing journalism environment.

Here on, you will find our popular how-to columns and “Toolbox” features, giving you the skills you need to excel. We also will bring you more timely journalism-related articles and the most recent news about SPJ’s chapters and events.

We still are working to determine exactly what Quill and will look like in this new format, but we have help in that process.

This fall, Sigma Delta Chi Foundation president Robert Leger formed a Quill Advisory Committee to examine Quill and develop a plan. The committee consists of Paul Fletcher (chair), Fred Brown, Ethan Chung, Jay Evensen, Sue Kopen Katcef, Patricia Gallagher Newberry and J. Alex Tarquinio.

The committee has explored Quill’s budget and production cycle, the editorial vision and the digital strategy. These changes come after a year of study and research, including a member survey, but there is more work to be done.

That’s why we’d like to hear from you! Quill is an important part of SPJ membership. Please comment below to let us know what you’d like to see in Quill and on

In the end, we produce Quill and our online content for you — the members. Your feedback matters, so if you have questions or comments, please let us know.

Thank you for all you do,

Paul Fletcher
Quill Advisory Committee Chairman
