Nominations open for SPJ board seats

Staff Report

This fall, SPJ will elect 13 leaders to serve on the Society’s national board of directors.

SPJ’s 23-member board of directors provides direction for how the organization carries out its mission to improve and protect journalism through programs such as First Amendment advocacy, educational training and the promotion of the highest standards of ethical reporting.

Elections will take place at the 2007 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference, Oct. 4 to 7 in Washington, D.C. Positions up for election this year include:

President-elect (one-year term). This person automatically becomes president of SPJ the following year.

Secretary/treasurer (one-year term).

Vice President, Campus Chapter Affairs (two-year term).

Director at-large (two-year term).

Campus adviser at-large (two-year term).

Campus representatives (two seats; one-year terms). These positions include travel stipends to cover costs of student participation.

Region 2 director (two-year term representing Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia).

Region 3 director (two-year term representing Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina).

Region 6 director (two-year term representing Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin).

Region 10 director (two-year term representing Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington).

Region 11 director (two-year term representing Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada and the Northern Mariana Islands).

Region 12 director (two-year term representing Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee).

To run for the national board, candidates must be national SPJ members in good standing, have a demonstrated commitment to SPJ and provide proof of employer support for SPJ activities.

Individuals who wish to run for president-elect must have served previously on the SPJ board of directors or the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation board of directors, as chairman of a national committee, or as a professional chapter president who has been or is a member of a national committee.

All individuals seeking a national board position will be asked to submit a photo and a one-page biography and complete a board questionnaire that will be distributed to all voting delegates.

Nominations must be received by July 30. If you have questions about running for office, are interested in serving or know of potential board or committee members, contact David Carlson, immediate past president and chairman of the SPJ National Nominating Committee.  He can be reached at (352) 846-0171 or carlson@spj.org.
