SDX Awards: Breaking News Photography

Winner: Oded Balilty, The Associated Press

by Jim Poyser

AP photographers have spent decades capturing images of the battles that have torn the West Bank and the Gaza Strip apart. A new type of confrontation surfaced as Israel shut down Jewish settlements in Gaza and the West Bank.

On Feb. 1, in the West Bank settlement of Amona, AP staff photographer Oded Balilty witnessed a lone Jewish settler woman waging an impossible battle to hold back a column of Israeli security officers.

Judges said: “An amazing, powerful and timeless image that captures both the tension of a newsworthy moment and the poignancy of a visual metaphor. Can be read on many levels.”
