All things Excellence in Journalism 2017

By Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Department

"I think it's really important for journalists to support each other, and to be able to get together in a space where they can brainstorm, network, share information and get away from the daily grind and think about both their own careers and the future of journalism."-- Farah Stockman, Pulitzer Prize winner, The New York Times social issues reporter and EIJ16 attendee on why EIJ inspires journalists.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Join us for a pre-conference happy hour mixer in Anaheim the evening before EIJ17 begins! Bring your friends and colleagues. Get additional details and RSVP.

The Opening Night Reception is a chance to reunite with colleagues, clients and friends, as well as meet and chat with new connections. Come hangout at Bowlmor Lanes with other journalists for a fun night of networking and 41 lanes of electro-cool blacklight bowling!

We have two amazing Super Sessions to attend this year. You won't want to miss " 21st-Century Reality: Covering Immigrant and Refugee Communities is for Every Journalist" or " Work in Progress: Pressing the President."

Join us as Radio Television Digital News Association and EIJ17 honor award-winning journalists Lester Holt with the Paul White Award and Jake Tapper with the John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award.

We're hosting a Twitter chat with Robert Hernandez at noon EDT, Aug. 15. Join us as we discuss last-minute EIJ questions and Robert's sessions at #EIJ17. ( #EIJChat)

GET A GIG

We've got some of the world's best media companies coming to EIJ17 - at least 56 exhibitors and recruiters will be on hand at the J-Expo and Career Fair.

Whether your next step is a bigger market, a position with more responsibility or getting into a position in a new place, there's an opportunity waiting for you.

LEARN SOME STUFF

EIJ is the place for journalism training - we have 60+ breakout sessions included as part of your conference registration. Check out the growing list of breakout sessions and this year's schedule.

If you're hungry for more in-depth skills training, check out these additional deep-dive workshops:

Watchdog Workshop*
Getting Drone Newsgathering Off the Ground: Navigating the Logistical, Technical and Regulatory Complexities*
Narrative Storytelling: Dump the Inverted Pyramid No Matter Your Medium Of Choice*
Getting Started with Social Video*
Google Tools for Journalists
Immersive Storytelling Showcase
Mobile Reporting and Data Visualization Tools*
Narrative Storytelling: Learning from The Land Of 10,000 Stories*

*Additional registration cost.

GIVE A LITTLE

Every year, SPJ members like you make the Legal Defense Fund Auction a success. Support legal cases to protect freedom of speech and press by donating an item to be auctioned off EIJ17.

Then, join us in our efforts to keep information unrestricted and available to the public by bidding on one of this year's auction items.

SPJ QUICK FIX

You can vote for SPJ national officers at EIJ17. Check out the SPJ Election Central page to see who has declared their candidacy so far.

The SPJ Board of Directors engaged in a process of self-examination over the past year and endorsed the recommendation of its Governance Task Force to assemble a new, smaller board one that is best suited to produce shared short- and long-term strategies for our ever-increasing vitality and viability into the future. Read more about the proposed bylaws changes and governance structure of SPJ before delegates take a vote at EIJ17.

REGISTER NOW

You get a discount on the regular registration rate for being a member of SPJ! You have until Aug. 15 to register and book your hotel room.

Whether it's networking, attending breakouts and Super Sessions, browsing the J-Expo, bowling or whale watching, there will be something for everyone at EIJ17! We can't wait to see you in Anaheim Sept. 7-9!
