Happy New Year from SPJ; Don't miss these important awards deadlines

By Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Department

"Ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information." --  SPJ Code of Ethics, just in case you need a refresher.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Happy New Year! Need some inspiration for your journalism-related resolutions this year? Check out media resolutions for 2018 from top editors and read these 10 resolutions for newsroom managers, even if you aren't one.

The New York Daily News is starting the new year without an editor-in-chief or a publisher. Arthur Brown retired Dec. 31 and Tronc hasn't hired a replacement, even though it knew about Brown's retirement in September.

When the SPJ National Board met in December, it approved a neutral process for future elections. Get the scoop from Region 2 Director Andy Schotz here.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

The Government Accountability Project released a guide for journalists that details best practices for working with whistleblowers. TL;DR -- the same ethical journalism principles apply.

GET A GIG

The San Francisco Media Company, publisher of the award-winning San Francisco Examiner and SF Weekly newspapers, is hiring a photo editor to oversee all photo-related aspects of both publications. To apply for this full-time position, send a one-page cover letter, resume and link to your portfolio with "Photo Editor" in the subject line to Managing Editor Laura Dudnick.

The Savannah Morning News is hiring a public safety reporter and an education reporter. To apply, send your resume, cover letter, references and links to at least five substantial stories you've covered to Multimedia Content Editor Josh Rayburn.

Advisers, professors and department heads: As you look ahead to 2018, take some time to encourage your students to submit their best work from 2017 into the Mark of Excellence awards program. The contest is open to any student enrolled in a college or university in 2017. The deadline to submit is Jan. 11 -- that's next week! Contact Program Coordinator Christine Cordial with questions.
