Yours until -30-

By Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Department

"At this point in our relationship, we know that breaking news can sometimes trump our plans. We've halted dates to cover house fires and shootings. ... Our chaotic work routines suck, but I can't imagine being married to someone who isn't a journalist. Who else would be so understanding when you have to leave dinner on the table and rush to a wildfire an hour away?" Melissa Davlin, politics reporter at the Times-News of Twin Falls, Idaho, in " The best, and worst, of having a journalist for a Valentine."

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Last week, Poynter shared an article about finding free images for stories that caused an uproar in the visual journalism community. In response, many in the community responded:

—Educator and visual journalist Mark E. Johnson wrote about why the article " contradicts everything I hold true about journalism."

—Photo editor Sue Morrow wrote a piece  proposing collaboration and solution-based thinking.

—NPPA put out a statement on its website:  Visuals have value, and so do visual journalists.

—Poynter President Neil Brown wrote about the issue.

House Bill 241 was introduced this week in Utah by Rep. Mike Schultz which would ban noncompete agreements for journalists working in television. So far, the bill passed committee 8-5 and now heads to the House floor. SPJ and RTDNA are keeping an eye on this legislation.

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

Reporter Theresa Bourke writes, "Ethics codes, of course, can't easily solve every ethical dilemma a journalist encounters, but they help." In a particularly tricky situation? You can also call (317-927-8000 ext. 208) or email ( ethics@spj.org) the SPJ Ethics Hotline to talk to an ethics expert about specific situations you're facing in your newsroom or career.
