On the record

By Anna Gutierrez, SPJ Communications Department

"I don't understand the business plan. How does cutting off a leg help you keep running?"- Denver Post Reporter Jesse Paul on the latest cuts at the Denver Post. The Post isn't the only paper facing layoffs this week.

JUST ANNOUNCED

Registration is now open for  Excellence in Journalism 2018! SPJ and Radio Television Digital News Association have exciting things planned for this year's conference. The theme? Trends, Tech, Talent and Trust.

EIJ18 will also have  different programming tracks -- Digital, News Management, Newsgathering and Career Development -- designed to make you a better journalist.

All the details can be found online -- including information about the  Oriole Park at Camden Yards tour.
The early-bird deadline is July 25, so make sure to register now! You can save up to $100.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Les Payne, Pulitzer-prize winner, SPJ Deadline Club Hall of Fame inductee and champion for racial equality,  died Monday night at the age of 76. He wrote for Newsday and retired in 2006. Payne was a founding member and former president of the National Association of Black Journalists.

The latest industry to get a Trump bump? Journalism schools. (No, really!  Applications have jumped at journalism schools across the country.)

Google announced a $300 million  Google News Initiative this week -- an effort to help build a stronger future of news by "elevating and strengthening quality journalism, evolving business models to drive sustainable growth and empowering news organizations through technological innovation."
Here are some things Google is launching:

Subscribe with Google, which allows readers to sign up for paid subscriptions from partner publishers
News Consumer insights dashboard, designed to help publishers improve subscription revenue by analyzing and segmenting their audiences
Outline, an open source tool for newsrooms to provide their journalists with secure internet access by setting up their own VPNs on private servers

ETHICS ESSENTIALS

Indira Lakshmanan, Newmark chair in journalism ethics at Poynter, writes about why "off-the-record" is a "bad convention that's antithetical to what we do as journalists" and why reporters should resist having off-the-record conversations.

"Being told something that's off-the-record puts us in a terrible bind. We can't un-know something," she writes. Read more here.

(This article is in response to the rules and ethics of off-the-record reporting following stories by Axios and The Daily Beast last week on White House Chief of Staff John Kelly's "off-the-record" briefing. Reporters from Axios and The Daily Beast did not attend the briefing but learned about it from sources who did.)

GET A GIG

Reveal, from the Center for Investigative Reporting, is hiring a membership manager. Details and responsibilities for this position are posted here. Apply here.

Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium brings fellows to its annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. This year's JAWS CAMP will be held at The Mount Hood Resort in Welches, Oregon, Oct. 12-14. There are five fellowships available for 14 women. Interested? Get more info here. If you have any questions about the fellowship or the application process, please contact Nikki Raz at  jawsfellows@gmail.com.

Come work at SPJ! We're hiring a part-time bookkeeper and a development manager -- both based in Indianapolis.

LEARN SOME STUFF

First Draft News launched a free, one-hour course that teaches journalists and the general public how to verify online media so that they don't fall for hoaxes, rumors and misinformation. Test your skills with this  verification challenge, then  sign up here!

GIVE A LITTLE

Georgetown University's USAID Electoral Policy Study Group is conducting a survey to better understand editorial practices for covering incidents of electoral violence. The deadline to take this five-minute survey is 11:55 p.m. EDT, April 1.

SPJ QUICK FIX

SPJ is looking for volunteers to write for Quill online. Quill web content will supplement Quill print stories and blogs, giving visitors timely articles about current journalism news. Please contact Quill Editor Michael Sanserino for more information.

Spread some warm fuzzies by nominating your SPJ mentors for one of these awards. The deadline to submit nominations is April 19.

The winners and finalists of this year's Mark of Excellence Awards contest from Region 12 were announced and honored at the Region 12 Conference on March 17. First-place winners from the regional contest will compete at the national level among other regional MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions. National winners will be notified in the late spring and will be recognized at the  Excellence in Journalism conference in Baltimore.
